I had no clue
When I started playing guitar around 25 years ago I had no means to record myself. And to be honest, at that point it wasn’t even on my mind. It all started when I wanted to audition for the Conservatorium of Amsterdam around 2010. I needed to send in my music for the audition but at that time I had never recorded something myself. I just bought my first Macbook and tried to figure out how to record my guitar with it.
How I started
I didn’t grow up around musicians and of the couple of bands I had played in only one recorded a few singles. So my experience in recording was basically non-existent. Which meant I had to figure it out myself.
This was a lengthy and messy process, and in hindsight I wish I had (looked for) more help along the way. Something to keep in mind here is that the internet was a different place back then. There surely was information available, but not as abundant as it is now.
What it is like now
And I think this is a great development, maybe with a small caviat. It is now so much easier to find solutions to your problems which makes recording music available for many more people. The downside is that there is also a lot of misinformation and people trying to sell you their products.
With my e-book I try to be on the good side: Provide information and give options without trying to sell you a pricy solution. I truly hope it comes over that way.

So if you’re just dipping your toes in recording your instrument, or if you’re just interested in what I have to say: You can download my e-book here!
Next time we’ll dive into the recording basics.
